Comments: When the name ?Manly? is heard, most people conjure thoughts of white, sandy beaches beckoning the Pacific Ocean?s waves...or the long-time slogan ...Manly, seven miles form Sydney and a thousand miles from care . But the Manly Golf Club stands up well against those sentiments as it has been the scene of some of this country?s greatest golf tournaments. Australian NSW Opens and international events have been held here and although the flat easy walking holes and the fact that the great Jim Ferrier Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman have all had 10 under par 62s to their credit may lull you into thinking that the course can be torn apart think again! There are enough hazards and bunkers to catch the wayward shot...there are some tough holes and there are some where the part may come a little easier. But the Manly course is right up there when tests of golf are debated at the 19th hole...and it richly deserves the reputation and respect of many good golfers. The Club was formed in 1907 four years after the first meeting was held to discuss its formation. A feature of the course is the magnificent hacienda style clubhouse that overlooks the course. It was designed by one of this country?s finest amateur golfers Eric Apperley who name is revered among his peers and others fortunate to see this Manly boy play. You will be a thousand miles from care (that slogan has a better ring in miles than say 1600 kilometres doesn?t it?) when you golf at Manly but take care and treat this course with respect. You will be amply rewarded.
