Comments: There has been a story going about ever since Muirfield opened in 1954 that ...the fairways are so narrow that you have to walk single file and you are unable to use a big ball... but the popularity of this compact course belies that tag. Anyway the locals rightly point out it is no wonder the Muirfield Club has nurtured such great golfers as Jack Newton Jnr (Australian and NSW Opens winner) Marea Parsons (nee Hickey) who was twice winner of the Australian Amateur Championship; Peter Read one of the country?s best lefties and Anne Jones a young woman whose handicap reached plus one. The tree-lined fairways complement the beautiful natural bush and deep rough and there is much pleasure to be gleaned from a a round of golf here. The most famous of holes at Muirfield would have to be the 14th known as The Laughing Hole because Players are advised to enjoy a good laugh before teeing off as they are likely to cry before putting out. Although not quite as difficult as it once was trouble abounds on this hole in the form of beckoning water hazards and cruel rough. An equal feature is the plaque on a specially erected brick wall at the 5th tee. This plaque is in memory of Polly Wearn the founder of the Muirfield Golf Club who died on February 26 1974 at the age of 64. The inscription is an apology to Rudyard Kipling?s IF and it reads: If you can hit the ball when all about you are missing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can keep your score when all men doubt you - but make allowance for their doubting too; If you can look and not get tired of looking and find your partner?s ball where ?ere it lies; Or being cursed but not give way to cursing and yet don?t look too good or talk too wise. If you can drive but not make drive your master If you can win and not make cups your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat these two imposters just the same; If you can putt when all the greens are bumpy or covered with a nice thick bed of sand; If you can smile while lying in a bunker and still admit you think the game is grand; If you can quote the many rules of golfing but not make golfing rules your bete noir; If you can stand aside and let men pass you and not make getting back your shining star; If you can watch your partner hit a beauty and give applause when yours has gone astray; If you can be above the petty gossip and come back smiling from a dreadful day; If you can come in tired sad and weary and drown your sorrows in a glass of beer If you can smile and ask the score of others and greet their triumph with a hearty cheer; If you can come along again next Thursday and sign the book and greet them with a smile; You?ll find e?n though you?re still a 36er the game of golf has really been worthwhile. Since Polly Wearn founded the club it has gone from strength to strength making progress as a Group III Group II and now is a highly rated Group 1 Club which has been the scene for a number of NSW Amateur Championships and offshoots of those events. No...you won?t have to walk single file at Muirfield but you will always want to come back again...won?t you?
