2013 Masters Champion Adam Scott will play his first tournament of the Australian summer of golf at home on the Gold Coast when he contends the Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola from 7-10 November 2013.
The PGA today confirmed Scott will headline the RACV Royal Pines field when the tournament returns to the Gold Coast for the first time since 1975.
“To be able to play at home at Royal Pines is going to be a lot of fun. All my friends and family will be out there so it’s going to be exciting way to start,” said Scott this week during his preparations for the US Open.
“The Gold Coast has been so supportive of me my whole career so it’s a good chance for me to hopefully go out and say thanks to them and play well.”
“The PGA is an amazing event – the history of winners there is Australia’s finest and I’d certainly like to put my name on that trophy.”
With tournament planning now well underway, the PGA says it intends to launch a number of new initiatives in the coming months with Adam’s new wardrobe addition, the green jacket, at front of mind.
While details are still to be confirmed, the PGA says it wants to ensure the public has adequate opportunity to celebrate Adam’s latest and greatest achievement.
“The significance of Adam’s victory is immense and we’re very excited to welcome him home to the Gold Coast,” said PGA CEO Brian Thorburn.
“To have Adam contend our Championship for its return to the Gold Coast is a wonderful opportunity, and we’re sure the fans will come out in their thousands to congratulate Scotty.”
Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey welcomed the news Scott would compete on home ground.
“It is with great pride we welcome Adam Scott back to play on the Gold Coast, giving local fans a fantastic opportunity to see our home-grown champion up close and in action,” Ms Stuckey.
“The Australian PGA Championship is a great addition to the Gold Coast event calendar, reinforcing its reputation as a premier sporting event destination as we count down to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games."
“I am sure this is just the first of many announcements in what will be a fantastic field for a not-to-be-missed 2013 Australian PGA Championship on Queensland’s Gold Coast.”
A three time winner on the PGA Tour of Australasia, Adam’s best finish in the Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola was tied for 4th in 2011.
His home-soil victories have come at the 2012 Australian Masters and the 2009 Australian Open, while his first home-tour title came at the European Tour co-sanctioned Johnnie Walker Classic in 2005, contested in Beijing.
In that same year Scott also won the PGA Tour of Australasia’s Order of Merit.
The 2013 Australian PGA Championship will be played at RACV Royal Pines on Queensland’s Gold Coast from November 7-10, and will be the first major PGA Tour of Australasia tournament staged on the Gold Coast in ten years.
The Championship is the PGA’s pinnacle annual tournament with the Joe Kirkwood Cup boasting the names of past champions including Kel Nagle, Peter Thomson, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros and Greg Norman.
