Cam Smith first PGA Tour winner in 2022

Jan 10, 2022

Australia’s Cameron Smith has won the season opening PGA Tour event, The Sentry Tournament of Champions at the Kapalua Resort in Hawaii.
The most exclusive event of the year is only open to winners from the main tour in 2021, so a hot group of 39 players gathered on the beautiful seaside course in Maui.
In sublime conditions the scoring was hot, and Australia’s Cam Smith opened with round of 65-64 to lead going into the weekend. World #1 Jon Rahm was paired with the mullet wearing Aussie and they went stroke for stroke in the third round, playing phenomenal golf. Rahm was able to claw back Smith’s overnight lead with a sensational third round 61, and the pair shared the lead after 54 holes. In fact it was shaping as a great week for the Aussies in the field, with Marc Leishman, Cam Davis and Matt Jones all in the Top 10 entering the final day.
Smith and Rahm went blow for blow in the final round, whenever one player put pressure on with a birdie the other responded. Meanwhile Matt Jones was having a day out, shooting a final round -12 (61) to jump into third place. Smith shot a final round 65 to Rahm’s 66 to eventually win the shootout by one shot. Smith, Rahm and Jones all beat the tournament record -31 by Ernie Els shot back in 2003.
For Smith it was the perfect start to what’s shaping as an exciting year for our best ranked Aussie. His 4th career win sees him jump to #3 in the FedEx Cup race and a major has his name on it in the year ahead!
