LIV Golf has finished its controversial first season in October with three events played during the month. The first was at Stonehill Golf Course just north of Bangkok, October 7-9. Stonehill is a new private golf course that only opened this year. Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra won the individual event with -19, pocketing a cool USD$4 million. The new Tour then headed to Jeddah, October 14-16 with golfers battling it out on one of the premier golf courses in the Middle East - the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club located in King Abdullah Economic City outside of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Brooks Koepka won a countback against Peter Uihlein
The big season finale was the LIV Golf Miami Team Championship at the Blue Monster, Trump National Doral Miami, Oct 28-30. The seeded three-day, knock-out tournament featured both match play and stroke play, delivering head-to-head competition as 12 teams competed for an historic USD$50 million purse, the biggest prize in golf.
In short the winning team received USD$16 million ($USD4 million each) with last place team members still receiving USD$250,000 for their 3 day’s work. Four teams remained in play for the final round; Brook Koepka’s Smash, Cameron Smith’s Punch, DJ’s Aces and Louis Oosthuizen’s Stingers.
DJ’s all American team took out the event with Talor Gooch, Patrick Reed and Pat Perez. They beat our Cam Smith’s Punch Team by one stroke.
It’s a slightly complicated format to explain so it’s best to visit the LIV website for the full rules and results HERE.
Dustin Johnson made further history by securing the inaugural LIV Golf Individual Championship.
With points being awarded to the top-24 finishers in each tournament during the 8 event season, Johnson’s consistency has put him in the record books as LIV Golf’s first season-long champion, securing the first place $USD18 million bonus prize.
“Locking up the individual competition is big. It’s an honor to be LIV’s first individual season champion,” said Johnson. “I’d like to thank Greg Norman and LIV for their confidence in me, my brother and caddie Austin, my wife Paulina, my Four Aces teammates Pat, Patrick, and Talor, as well as LIV’s growing legion of fans around the world. Our team is in a really good position with two events to go and I’m looking forward to further contributing to LIV Golf’s exciting story and continued growth.”
There will be plenty of food on the tables of all the LIV inaugural signings for Christmas and it will be interesting to see where the 2023 LIV circus will head, with an Australian venue mooted for April.
