Marc Leishman seems pretty confident for the Augusta National and is unfazed by what his compatriot Jason Day refers to as the Tigermania!
The world number 16 golfer has been drawn alongside Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and the former world number one Tiger Woods! They’d be playing together during the first two rounds of the Augusta Masters tournament that started Thursday night, April 5.
Leishman is unfussed
Quite fortunately for the Australian golfer, he seems unfussed by all the media attention he’s getting because of the draw. It’s not the first time that Leishman has been drawn alongside the US superstar. He was in the same group as Woods during the final round of the BMW International, in the year 2009. He played very well that day. He has this knack to rise to the big occasions, as shown time and again, including during his two wins in America last year.
Talking to the press, the 34-year old golfer said, “I’m pretty stress free and it won’t change my preparation because of the pairing. Any time you get a pairing like that, I guess is a compliment. I’ll take that as a compliment from Augusta National. I’m excited about it. It’s a big stage, the biggest stage. It would be nice if I can get out there and play well and show everyone what I can do." It’s not without a reason that Leishman was awarded the Greg Norman medal in 2017.
Coming from Warrnambool on the Victoria’s West Coast, the Australian golfer said that his only challenge lately has been explaining to his eldest son why Tiger Woods is so popular, keeping in mind that majority of his wins had come more than 10 years ago!
He spoke about the dilemma at the press conference, “My son Harvey has only just learnt about [Tiger]. How many trophies has he won, daddy?’ ‘Seventy eight.’”
"'How many have you won?' 'Three’."
Considering the kind of hysteria that surrounds Tiger Woods wherever he goes to play, and the fact that this tournament is being touted as his return to big-time golf ever since 2015, a good amount of betting activity has already started around his chances in the tournament. Will go all guns blazing!
Marc Leishman is determined to prove himself at this week’s Masters, and will go all guns blazing to break through his major championship barrier. Considering he has successfully beaten some of the best golfers on a regular basis last year, will help his cause.
The Victorian shed the tag of being the most underrated player at the US PGA Tour, having a breakout 2017 season. Not only did he win the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but also the BMW Championship during the FedEx cup play-offs.
Talking about his readiness for the next step, and lift the trophy on the biggest stage of golf, he told AAP, “I feel like I'm not scared to win; I've come up against the world's best players and beat them head-to-head."
