It was Father’s Day on the final day of the US Open and new dad Jon Rahm celebrated it in style. His wife gave birth to their first child on the eve of the US Masters two months back and now he’s the US Open Champion. His wife and son greeted him after he left the 18th green and then watched him on the driving range as he waited for Louis Oosthuizen to complete his round and force a possible playoff. It wasn’t to be. Making the victory even more meritorious, it was Rahm’s first tournament back after he tested positive for coronavirus.
Starting the last round three shots back (just like he did at this same venue in 2017 when he won the Farmers Insurance Open), Rahm was one of five players tied on the front nine with another five players just one shot behind. It was a crowded Open leader board, however as the course took hold of his competitors, Rahm took hold of the course. Brilliant birdies on the final two holes saw Rahm record a 67 and this helped him to a one shot victory over second placed Louis Oosthuizen.
It was just two weeks ago that Rahm was sensationally forced to withdraw from the Memorial Tournament while holding a six shot lead after testing positive to coronavirus. Bitterly disappointed he regrouped, self-quarantined and then triumphed this week for his first major. He also became the first Spanish player to win the US Open and the just the fourth Spaniard to win a major. There’s sure to be more from the 26 year old, former World #1.
Big names to fade included Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa (T4) and Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele (T7). Harris English grabbed sole third place thanks to a fine final round 68, while the feel good story of the tournament belonged to Italy’s Guido Migliozzi who also finished with a 68 to finish T4. The little known Italian kept plugging away and the gallery cheered every shot as he climbed the leader board in the final round.
Australian’s didn’t fare too well, with Adam Scott the best placed in T35 (+5). Wade Ormsby finished T40 one shot adrift of Scott, with Marc Lishman (64) and Matt Jones (T65) the only other Aussies to make the cut.
