Starting the day with a three shot lead over Aussie Cameron Smith, Scottie Scheffler franked his extraordinary rise to World #1 with a three shot victory at the 86th US Masters.
In February this year Scheffler won his first PGA Tour title. Two months later he’d won three from five to start the US Masters as the World #1, the quickest rise to the #1 ranking after winning a first PGA Tour event. It took just 42 days. To put that in perspective, Tiger took around 250 days to reach number one after his first PGA Tour win.
A week later and the hottest player on Tour won his first major by three shots, making it four wins in six starts at just his third appearance at the Masters. A double bogey six at the final hole was the only blemish on his card for the day and it did nothing to dampen his sprits or detract from a near perfect final round.
His playing partner for the day Australian Cameron Smith spluttered his way around the course chasing the green jacket after starting three shots behind Scheffler. He started with two birdies and it was game on, however he followed with two bogeys and that took away his momentum. Smith all but ruined his chances of victory with a triple bogey six at the par three 12th hole. His final round 73 put him back in a tie for third with Shane Lowry (69).
Leaping into sole second place was Rory McIlroy. Starting the day well back at +1 and some ten shots adrift the leader, Rory played stunning golf and carded an eight under 64, the best round of the tournament. Seemingly unshackled of expectation, Rory threw caution to the wind and came home with a wet sail, finishing the day by holing a bunker shot on eighteen for par. The crowd went nuts and Rory raised his hands high and celebrated like he’d won the lotto. He sort of did – second place at the Masters is worth a lot of loot. Of course he doesn’t need it but it shows just how much a good showing at the big dance means.
Only nine players bettered par at a tough Augusta – the final day’s fine weather was the first bit of respite for the field after three tough days of cold, wind and a sprinkling of rain.
In his first Masters tournament, Australia’s Min Woo Lee showed he has a bright future finishing T14 on +2. March Leishman played solid golf tee to green but just couldn’t get his flat stick to do anything, he finished T30 on +5.
Cameron Davis was at +12 (46) and Adam Scott +14 T48). The only Aussie failing to make the cut from six starters was Lucas Herbert.
Tiger Woods, in his first appearance after serious injury 12 months prior, amazingly made the cut but finished well back in the field.
Scottie Scheffler continues a season to remember by earning his first Major title! He trusted his Pro V1 to win by a three-shot margin and take home his fourth win of the season.
