Xander Schauffele began the 2nd Major of 2024 – the US PGA Championship - as the only player in the top five of the Official World Golf Ranking without a major championship and the tag “the best players on Tour without a major” wasn’t one that he would have enjoyed. His one shot victory over a fast finishing Bryson DeChambeau finally put that to an end to his drought and his first Major victory sees him move from No. 3 to No. 2 in the World rankings.
It was Schauffele’s eighth PGA TOUR title in his 175th start at 30 years, 6 months and his first major championship title in his 28th major championship start. His 263 four round total set a new PGA Championship 72-hole scoring record (previous: 264/Brooks Koepka/2018) and his 21-under is the lowest score in relation to par in major championship history (previous was 20-under, five times: Jason Day/2015 PGA Championship, Henrik Stenson/2016 Open Championship, Dustin Johnson/2020 Masters Tournament, Cameron Smith/2022 Open Championship, Bryson DeChambeau/2024 PGA Championship).
Schauffele was a deserved victor – he led the field in birdies (25) and Greens in Regulation (60 of 72) on the way to posting four rounds under-par at a major championship for the first time in his career.
2020 U.S. Open champion and LIV Golfer Bryson DeChambeau (2nd/-20) led the field in Driving Distance (330.5 yards) and was seeking to become the 21st player to win the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open and first since Brooks Koepka in 2019. He was Clubhouse leader until Schauffele birdied the final hole.
Viktor Hovland (3rd/-18), who finished T2 in the 2023 PGA Championship, was attempting to become the first player since Jack Nicklaus (1975) to win the PGA Championship after a runner-up finish. He also posted four rounds under-par at a major championship for the first time in his career in a terrific week.
Australian Min Woo Lee finished T26 (-9) to be the best placed Aussie. Jason Day and Lucas Herbert finished T43 (-6), Cam Smith T63 (-3) and Adam Scott (+3) and Cam Davis (+7) missed the Cut of -1.
