Wyndham Clark wins US Open, Cam Smith finishes 4th

Jun 21, 2023

American Wyndham Clark held off a trio of major champions - Rory McIlroy (2nd), Scottie Scheffler (3rd) and Cameron Smith (4th) - to win his first major championship and second PGA TOUR title. He became the fifth straight player to win his first major championship at the event.
Australian Cameron Smith finished four shots behind the leader in a terrific result although he never looked like winning during the final round. Fellow countryman Min Woo Lee also had a great week, finishing one shot behind Smith in T5. Other Aussies; Scott, Day, Davis, Herbert and amateur Karl Vilips missed the cut.
During the final round it quickly became a battle between Clark and McIlroy, with the maiden major winner holding out Rory. It’s now almost a decade since Rory won his last major. McIlroy finished second for his 19th top-10 in majors since his most recent title in 2014, the most of any player in that span. The 23-time TOUR winner now has 10 runner-up finishes on TOUR and three in major championships.

Rick Fowler was the 54 hole leader but he faded badly in the final round. He becomes the 12th player to lead each of the first three rounds of the U.S. Open and not win (first since Russell Henley in 2021) and falls to 2-for-10 to date in converting the 54-hole lead into victory.
Third placed Scottie Scheffler retains the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking, his 16th straight T12 or better on the PGA TOUR. He is the only player with top-10 finishes in each of the first three majors this season.

In other notable results;

  • Tommy Fleetwood equalled the lowest final round score in U.S. Open history for the second time (2018)
  • Jon Rahm finished T10 and retains the lead in the FedExCup standings
  • The cumulative scoring average of 71.76 is the lowest in U.S. Open history
  • The 2023 U.S. Open produced three rounds of 63 or better, the most in major championship history
