AUSTRALASIANS MOVING ON UP!

Apr 29, 2008

Ten international victories in four months -
Adam Scott has moved back up five places to World Number 5 after his sensational victory at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship. *

The 27 year old Queenslander made a 9-foot birdie putt on the 18th to force a playoff, then made a 48-footer playing it again on the third playoff hole to beat American Ryan Moore and move back to number 5 with Geoff Ogilvy right behind him in 6th place.

There are currently 13 Australasians in the Official World Golf Ranking Top 100, including Scott, Ogilvy, Aaron Baddeley (11), Stuart Appleby (25), Robert Allenby (43), Nick O’Hern (48), John Senden (53), Peter Lonard (55), Mark Brown NZL (57), Richard Green (65), Brendan Jones (66), Rod Pampling (70) and Nathan Green (92).

The World Rankings reflect the great start to the 2008 international golf season for the Australasian players with 10 international victories in less than four months.

Scott led the charge in January when he claimed the Commercialbank Qatar Masters with a stunning final round of 11 under par 61, a record low score for him and backed up that win yesterday, claiming his first win in the US since last year’s Shell Houston Open.

He leapfrogged good mate Geoff Ogilvy who is world number six and who continued his big tournament success when he ended the astonishing winning streak of world number one Tiger Woods by claiming the rain interrupted World Golf Championship – CA Championship by one shot last month. Ogilvy became just the third player to win more than one WGC event defeating Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk.

New Zealander Mark Brown left no one in doubt that he has arrived on the world golf scene, picking up his second straight victory and the biggest in his career, the 2008 Johnnie Walker Classic in February.

The 33 year old secured the USD$2,500,000 Johnnie Walker Classic at DLF Golf and Country Club in Delhi by a comfortable three shots, just one week after he emerged as the four shot winner at the 2008 SAIL Open on the Asian Tour, his first professional victory. He moved to the top of the Australasian and Asian Tours Order of Merit with the win.

Once again the Nationwide Tour is proving to be a happy breeding ground of success for the Australians who have broken records on their way to success this year. In the best start to a Nationwide Tour season, the Aussies have won an incredible five of the first eight events and hold the top three positions on the Money List and have a further two players in the Top 10.

Holding court is Victorian Jarrod Lyle who leads the Money List with four top ten finishes including his maiden professional victory at the Mexico Open in January. Lyle smashed the field at the Nationwide Tour’s Mexico Open to win by five shots.

The following month New South Welshman Ewan Porter blew the field away at the Moonah Classic to win by an incredible seven shots, the third highest winning margin in Nationwide Tour history. It was Porter’s first professional win and he led from wire to wire.

A month later 39 year old Gavin Coles from Bathurst in New South Wales claimed his fourth career title on the Nationwide Tour by one shot from American Kyle Thompson, firing a final round 1 under 71 to win the Chitimacha Louisiana Open.

The following week Sydney’s Aron Price become the fourth Australian to win on the Nationwide Tour this year, claiming the Athens Regional Foundation Classic <https://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/h090/> on the second play off hole against American J.J.Killeen. The 25 year old from the Sutherland Shire claimed his first professional title in his third full year on the Nationwide Tour after starting four shots behind Killeen, the overnight leader.

Then just two days ago West Australian left hander Greg Chalmers took the Australian winning numbers to five from eight events edging out Henrik Bjornstad of Norway on the second hole of sudden death to win the Henrico County Open. The victory was worth $US90,000 for the 31 year old who has moved to second on the season money list behind Jarrod Lyle with $US161,154. Ewan Porter is third, Aron Price 5th and Gavin Coles 10th. The top 25 at the end of the year will move onto the PGA TOUR in 2009.
