John Senden was today's big mover at the Emirates Australian Open shooting a 9-under-par round to take him to the outright lead at 12-under.
A former Australian Open winner, Senden’s round was the lowest he has ever carded in Australia which is also a new course record for the re-designed Lakes course.
“I shot 65 at Royal Sydney, that was seven under and one of my favourite rounds in Australia,” said Senden
“Shooting nine under is something you don’t do very often, you have to take it when you get it and put yourself in contention.”
Seven birdies as well as an eagle helped Senden go low and move up the leaderboard in the third round.
“Today was moving day. There is a long way to go but I am trying to stay focused on what I need to do.”
“Win, lose or draw, I am going to be doing my best tomorrow.”
It was a great day on course for Senden, who after an impressive year on the US TOUR was looking forward to heading home for the Australian season of golf.
“I’ve had a good season in America and finished up well in the FedEx Cup,” said Senden.
“I had a good run of tournaments through Malaysia and also in Shanghai last week where I finished 19th; I was playing solid.”
“I like to come home and play my way into these events and coming in with some momentum has helped me.”
One shot behind Senden, Jason Day had another solid day on course recording just one bogey to keep the Stonehaven Cup firmly within his sights.
Celebrating his 24thbirthday, today, Day was pleased with his on course performance.
Sitting behind Day at 10-under is Greg Chalmers while a further shot back at 9-under is Nick O’Hern and Nick Watney.
The other big mover of the day was Queenslander Ryan Haller whose 7-under-par round catapulted him to tied sixth at 8-under, with first round leader Jarrod Lyle.
Tiger Woods failed to capitalise on his second round lead, carding five bogeys and just two birdies for his 3-over-par round.
Obviously keen to make an impression tomorrow, Woods headed straight to the practice facilities following his round before still finding plenty of time to sign autographs for waiting fans.
The Emirates Australian Open will continue at The Lakes Golf Club tomorrow from 7.22am.
