Strong Aussie contingent at The Masters

Apr 5, 2012

The 2012 Masters Tournament tees off at Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia USA on Thursday night (9.50pm AEST) with a six man strong Aussie contingent looking to claim Australias first green jacket. One of Australias best golfers but is still yet to claim his first major, Adam Scott will be determined to finish one better than last year and claim the green jacket. Having only played three events so far this season, Scott has managed to fly under the radar of the Masters hype this year which will suit the laid back Queenslander. He will quietly go about his business in pursuit of victory and should feature high on the leaderboard. Scott also has another weapon in his arsenal, absent from 2011s runner up finish, Steve Williams. Williams has caddied in three Augusta victories so will be able to guide Scott around the course. A huge talent Jason Day has made no secret of his desire to be the world number one and a victory at the Masters this week will certainly push him back into the worlds top ten. 2011 was Days first opportunity to compete in the Masters and he finished tied for runner up. Now with the intimate knowledge of what it takes to play at Augusta National during Masters week we expect him to be in contention come Sunday. However he has to get there first, an injury to his left ankle and foot is not ideal on the eve of the Masters but showing true Aussie spirit Day will battle on. Geoff Ogilvy will be trying to add the green jacket to his 2006 US Open victory. He finished in a tie for fourth, with Tiger Woods, at Augusta last year after five consecutive birdies launched him up the leaderboard. Now with the confidence that he can fire on the back nine come Sunday afternoon Geoff Ogilvy could easily be the leading Aussie this weekend and if that was also as the Masters Champion it would be even sweeter. Now ranked 29th in the Official World Golf Rankings this is John Sendens third time at Augusta with previous years not bringing many fond memories for the Queenslander who missed the cut in both 2008 and 2010. But this year he comes into the Masters in great form, having played seven PGA TOUR tournaments this year and finishing in the top 10 three times. Aaron Baddeley has had a solid season to date with one top 10 and four top 25s but with the worlds best golfers all vying to be the Masters Champion more than solid is required this week. The Victorian has not traditionally played his best at Augusta having now competed six times making the cut just three times and a lack lustre tied 17th being his best finish in 2009. Yet with knowledge of the course on his side and an impressive 2011 season behind him 2012 could be Baddeleys best performance at the Masters. The Masters has a rich history of recognising elite amateurs and inviting them to the hallowed grounds of Augusta. This year thanks to his victory in the 2011 Amateur Championship 21 year old Victorian Bryden MacPherson has earnt a place in the field. MacPherson has spent the past three years at the University of Georgia and has had the pleasure of playing Augusta previously. He comes into the tournament fresh from winning the Georgia Cup, an exhibition match between the British Amateur Champion and the US Amateur Champion (American Kelly Kraft who is also in the field this week). He is aiming to claim The Silver Cup awarded to the top amateur and is also confident of performing well against the worlds best. Television Times With the worlds best vying to be the 2012 Masters Champion and six Australians trying to win the country's first green jacket the quality golf coming from Augusta National should not be missed.
