Cockatoo Rise

After achieving the dream of many golfers by building their own golf course, Vietnam veteran Greg and his wife Anne are sadly putting their COCKATOO RISE property on the market for sale.

The 9 hole golf course is part of their property which provides a retreat, free of charge, to our returned service personal from all conflicts, to enjoy a safe, secure and peaceful location to spend time with their partners and mates.

Inspiration for the course came from enjoying a bottle of wine and watching the sunset one evening. Anne suggested to Greg he build a golf hole leading from the house. After that was completed Greg decided a few more holes would make it a bit more interesting. One thing led to another and before long a basic 18 hole course had been laid out in the paddocks around the property.

Some working bees with volunteers in the early stages helped plant trees and lay some greens out. Before long, with constant mowing of the course and time for the trees to develop, a very pretty environment was realised to enjoy a round of golf.

Some of the veterans who visit the retreat are disabled and need special care. Many have not played golf before and would not go to a regular course, not wanting to make a fool of themselves in front of club members. The retreat has been kindly donated clubs, bags and two golf carts - giving those veterans who find walking a difficulty an opportunity to enjoy an activity they perhaps could not participate in normally.

Physical activity is a very important part of the retreats facility, getting veterans to participate and communicate with other people is a vital part of recovery from things like PTSD. Greg and Anne are on call 24/7 to help with any requests that are presented to them by those staying at the retreat or other veterans who just need to have a chat on the phone.

Age and a few heart issues are catching up with Greg, so it’s time to move to a smaller property, still providing this valuable facility for those who have served this nation.

The spectacular 50 acre property with a 42 sq designer open plan home overlooking the Gippsland Lakes is for sale for offers around $1.7 million. It’s an ideal location to retire or have as a holiday home in a region that offers so much from the open sea to the snow fields at Hotham. Of course the retreat goes with Greg and Anne and the new owner is free to do what they want with the property and golf course.
